Beschreibung

The Battle for the Ancient World has Begun!


Centuries before Caesar, Alexander or Philip, the forested hills and rocky coasts of ancient Italy draw cultures from across the Mediterranean with promises of wealth and prosperity. Bronze-clad hoplites from the powerful Greek city-states set sail across the Adriatic to carve out bridgeheads of Hellenic culture amongst the native Italic hill tribes, while aggressive bands of Gallic Skirmishers make the trek South across the Alps in search of fertile new land. And along the marshy banks of the Tiber river, a small upstart city called Rome battles for independence from the established Etruscan confederacy.

But only one faction can rise to become the greatest empire the Mediterranean has ever seen. Will Rome fulfil its destiny to rule the ancient world or will history be rewritten to forge a new Etruscan, Gallic, or Greek hegemony!

Hegemony III: Clash of the Ancients? Ja, die Frage kommt zurecht, denn es handelt sich um einen absoluten Geheimtipp, wenngleich mittlerweile doch auch einige Youtube Videos zu dem spiel veröffentlicht wurden. Leider, muss ich sagen, denn dieses Spiel vom kanadischen Spieleentwickler Longbow Games hat einiges zu bieten, wonach mancher Hardcore Stratege bei anderen Titeln vergeblich sucht.

Nachdem das Spiel in 2015 auf den Markt gekommen ist, ein paar Updates bekommen hat und in 2017 die erste DLC "The Eagle King" mit Sizilien-Karte und Invasion-Szenario aus der Off-Map, hat Longbow für 2021 die nächste DLC "Isle of Giants" angekündigt mit Fokus auf Sardinien & Korsika sowie (antike) Kriegs- und Belagerungsmaschinen. Also ein Grund, sich mal wieder mit dem Spiel zu beschäftigen!

Das Spiel findet auf einer Karte der italienischen Halbinsel statt und zwar noch bevor Rom die Oberhand gewonnen hat. Tatsächlich startet Rom als eine einzelne Stadt neben einer Vielzahl anderer Stadtstaaten und Fraktionen (die natürlich alle spielbar sind). Als Rom-Spieler gilt es daher, sich die Vormachtstellung gegenüber Etruskern, Griechen und Kelten zu verdienen.

Das Spielgeschehen besteht darin, den eigenen Herrschaftsbereich auszudehnen oder zumindest nicht von den Gegnern überrannt zu werden. Damit das gelingt, muss der Spieler die Ressourcen wie Nahrung, Gold, Holz und Mannstärke erschließen und managen, seine Städte ausbauen, seine Armeen ausbilden und den Technologiebaum erklimmen. All das ist im Prinzip nicht neu, aber die Umsetzung in diesem Spiel ist außergewöhnlich und herausfordernd.

Einfach mal am Anfang ein paar Armeen bauen und los geht der Eroberungszug? So wie man das von anderen Strategie-Spielen kennt? Pustekuchen. Dafür reichen oft schon die Ressourcen nicht. Doch selbst wenn man sich die Ressourcen erschlossen hat und loslegen kann, kommen auch schon die Jahreszeiten ins Spiel. Andere Strategiespiele kennen zwar auch Jahreszeiten, ich möchte aber mal behaupten, dass es in keinem anderen Spiel (das ich kenne) so einen Unterschied macht, ob man seine Kampagne im Winter beginnt. Wenn man seine Nahrungsvorräte nicht gut geplant hat, dann kann das in Hegemony III leicht zum vollständigen Verlust der Armee und revoltierenden Städten führen!

Insgesamt kann ich das Spiel jedem "reifen" Strategen nur wärmstens empfehlen, der Hegemonys "hard core strategy" in historischer Atmosphäre zu schätzen weiß und offen für eine Alternative zu den Total War und Paradox Spielen ist.
  • interessantes Szenario im Italien vor dem Aufstieg Roms
  • hat eine stufenlos zoombare Karte, d.h. man kann von der strategischen Kampagnen-Karte a la Grand Strategy bis in die taktische Schlachtfeldkarte reinzoomen
  • hat ein Versorgungssystem das den Namen verdient und entscheidenden Einfluss auf den Verlauf der Kampagne ausübt
  • die Spielmechaniken sind gut durchdacht und in das Spielgeschehen eingebunden (bspw. die Beförderung von Anführern oder der Technologie-Baum)
  • Bilddesign und Musik fühlen sich historisch und immersiv an
  • nicht unbedingt die Art von ausgereifter Graphik, die man evtl. von AAA-Spielen gewohnt ist (aber gut genug)
  • Diplomatie und Handel sollten noch stärker ausgebaut werden, momentan sind die Möglichkeiten hier eher begrenzt
  • die KI könnte hier und da noch verbessert werden (aber ist das nicht in jedem Spiel so?)
  • kein Multi-Player Modus (dafür hat wohl das Geld nicht mehr gereicht)
