Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu is one of a pair of games released for the platform. They are action role-playing games and represent the first of the series for the Switch, and are a remake of the 1998 Gameboy game Pokémon Yellow. This game of the pair features the bright yellow much-loved character Pikachu.

As well as being this game’s mascot and the starting Pokémon, Pikachu is perhaps the most beloved and best recognised of all the Pokémon, having become something of an emblem to the Pokémon game franchise as a whole.

Pikachu is a bright yellow, Electric-type Pokémon, with orange/ scarlet circles on his or her cheeks and brown or tan stripes running across his or her back. Longish ears are topped with black tips, and the little creature has a relatively long, lightning bolt shaped tail. Pikachu’s cry is a distinctive ‘Pika-pika’ with a determined and drawn out ‘Pika-chu!’ when they are attacking. The cheek circles serve as electricity storage pouches, and must be ‘recharged’ with plenty of rest and sleep at night.

About the Game

The game is set in the Japanese region known as Kanto, an area that can be called the spiritual home of Pokémon as it is where the first generation of the little creatures, games and literature is set. It lies to the south of Sinnoh, and east of Johto. All the towns in Kanto are named after colours: Veridian City, Indigo Plateau and so on.

On arriving in the game, the player will set up their character and set forth. Pretty soon, they stumble across Team Rocket with predictable results as that scheming team set about trying to outwit the player and Pikachu, as usual! But will they succeed this time? That answer lies with you!

Play is much as expected, with the player under a challenge to explore the region, find all the gyms and best the gym owners, before heading to the championships to try to become the best of the best, ably assisted throughout by the stunningly talented Pikachu, who, as always, prefers to remain outside of the Poké Ball and who is not really interested in evolving, and would much rather sit on the player’s shoulder and observe all the action.

Fun Facts about the Games

  • The game is limited to just the 150 original Pokémon that were released in generation one, but there are occasionally options to update your stable. Pokémon appear in the wild and are captured with the player making an authentic throwing motion, as if they were throwing a Poké Ball rather than simply holding a JoyCon or similar

  • The player can choose to have a male or female Pikachu, while setting up their character in the opening moments of play. Female Pikachu’s tails have a heart-shaped ending, much like the female Eevee in the counterpart game, despite Eevee’s not usually being distinguishable by gender

  • Both Pikachu and Eevee have higher than usual base stats in this game, with individual values of thirty-one: a perfect score

  • The game can be teamed with Pokémon GO in order to meet new Pokémon to collect in real life settings

  • This game, and its twin, come with an optional extra controller called a Poké Ball Plus. This optional extra comes with a special enclosure: a rare Mythical Pokémon called Mew who cannot be found or collected any other way

  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu is available for purchase on Instant Gaming for a fraction of its retail price. You will receive an official key and be able to play the game in seconds. Play smart. Pay less.

A pretty good re-imagination of the original Pokemon Yellow, although with somewhat a lack of depth, and no more random battles, for better or worse. Gameplay does feel dated, and the world can at times feel empty, mostly because most of the NPC's are very 1-dimensional.

Great game, honeslty think its gone a bit mainstream. Great selection and has everything for fans of all ages. Not like the older Pokemon games such as Heartgold or even X and Y, but nevertheless enjoyable to play
    • Enjoyable to play, artistically fantastic
