Dragon ball Z Kakarot for PC is perhaps the thirtieth or so incarnation of the highly popular, predominantly Japanese franchise, but this one could be the very best of all: less of a straight-up fighting game, as are the others, this version is more of an action role-playing game (RPG) in which the character can roam widely, ranging to any interesting spots on the map and seeing what there is to see, and, of course, having adventures there too!

About the Game

The game is not just a free-ranging RGP though: it has many of the beloved features of the original too. Once combat starts, the fighting game reverts to the more traditional form that long-term fans of the game will adore. The gameplay is designed to give you a smooth and seamless battle, tethering you to your opponent and using simple, single-button combos to create the character’s distinctive signature moves. This avoids frustration that might otherwise plague play time.

You can play as you please: if you want button mashing chaos, you can do that, and if you want to be a bit more tactical about matters, you can do that too. But whichever way you play, bear in mind that your opponents have some sophistication to them and can use special moves to block or parry your flurry of attacking moves – and they also have some rather sneaky tricks up their sleeves too.

This version of the game is single player only, but to beef up the challenge aspect some of the boss levels have alarmingly powerful (or just plain weird!) attack or defence mechanisms that mean that you have to think on your feet in order to get around them. The net result is that you do not really notice the lack of multi-player or player-vs-player (PvP) levels as you are fully exercised playing solo.

Gameplay and Graphics

The graphics of this game are great. Capturing the lively and colourful cartoonlike imagery of the early episodes, but combining it with modern understanding of shadowing, light-play, musculature and other techniques that add subtle realism to even fantasy monsters and characters, footage is vibrant and bright, easy to follow along, even as the storyline is compressed and made concise for easy passage from story milestone to battleground.

The entire Dragon Ball Z saga is covered in this one game, hence the necessity for the compression mentioned above, but the developers did it fairly comprehensively, ensuring that all the key points of the character’s narrative and developmental arcs are included. Some of the more minor character have been excluded, probably to make the game more streamlined, but enough is included for old fans and new to have something to get their teeth into.

The physics engines are realistic, with movements seeming to create friction, weapons having weight and needing effort to lift and swing, and enemies falling, when they fall, with a satisfyingly meaty thump!

Side Quest Fun

There are a number of side quests or missions that you can play through to earn some extra XP (experience points) and take a breather from the main game should it become too intense for you. These include:

  • Finding ingredients for a chef to make you a special dish

  • Rescuing NPCs (non-playing characters) from evil robots

  • Helping Bulma to repair a machine or mechanism by finding the spare parts that are needed for the job

  • Following an imposter ghost about as the spirit tries to lead you astray, distracting you from returning to your main quest

  • Dragon ball Z Kakarot for PC is available for purchase on Instant Gaming for a fraction of its retail price. You will receive an official key and be able to play the game in seconds. Play smart. Pay less.
