Heroes and Generals is a free to play first person shooter real time strategy game set in the various theatres of war in which World War Two played out. This game is perfect for history buffs with an interest in the 1930s and 1940s and WWII, and also for anyone who enjoys tactical thinking and battle recreations.

About the Game

The game developers call it a ‘Mass Participation game’ rather than a traditional massively multiplayer online game (MMO) because of the co-operative nature of the huge set pieces and battles.

You can use weapons from the Soviet Union, United States of America, and Germany, all authentic for the time, as regards gun shot sounds, magazine capacity and range.

The game begins with you having one soldier from each of the three countries, each with their own specialism and preferences.

There are currently four game modes to try out and perfect, and new modes are constantly under development to keep the player base happy and coming back. Do keep checking back to see what’s new, especially if you haven’t played for a while!

The Nitty Gritty

There are four game modes to try and master, each with their own unique challenges and rewards:

  • Encounter- you can play straight away and this is where you will spend your time at first, levelling up and earning enough points to move onto other modes. ‘Encounters’ are simplified Skirmishes with only one control point. A team will win when they have held the control point for sufficient time

  • Skirmishes: these games ca be played by anyone who has completed at least one Encounter and thus reached Rank. Two teams, each with their own spawn point, battle for control of three control points. As soon as one control point is being held, a bar at the top of the screen begins to fill, filling faster the more control points are held. Once the bar is filled, the game is won

  • Assault sees a team defending themselves against one or two offensive teams. The attacking team must try to seize the control points while the defenders do everything they can to prevent it. Each main control point is surrounded by smaller strategic sites that will need to be taken before the main control point can be seized. Offensive teams win by taking all the main control points, while defenders win by allowing the timer to run out without the offense being successful – or by capturing the offenders own control points!

  • Tank vs Tank, like Encounter, only has one control point. The two teams each have two spawn points, but you will need only tanker-class soldiers as the game mode is meant to facilitate tank-on-tank battles. AI infantry is spawned to fight alongside your tanks should you need it

  • A further note for Assault mode: You must have achieved at least Level IV to play the Assault game mode. Getting one of your characters to Level IV unlocks the Assault maps, after which time all your soldiers – regardless of rank – can then play in the mode.
