About the Game

You are the only playable character, ‘The Boss, and you used to belong to one of the three gangs that control the city. They are Marshall Defense Industries (the one you used to be a part of) which is a high-powered semi-militia – think well-armed, high-tech private security and you’re getting close; Los Panteros who love lots of muscle, whether it is on their bodies or in their cars; and The Idols, who are clubbing night-owls with a tendency to anarchy.

You have become dissatisfied with all three gangs and decide to assemble people loyal to you (see below for details about some of your people) and make a move to make your gang the top player in town. You have to work your way through the nine districts of the town, which include a gambling quarter not unlike a miniature Las Vegas, Rancho Providencio which is a run-down semi-rural enclave, and Monte Vista which is a lovely suburban area.

A new factor in this game allows players to use vacant lots in districts that have been taken over to set up businesses (illegal businesses with false fronts) through which to fund the gang and also launder any ill-gotten gains. The game has also gone vertical with new tools to help you get up and down, adding a layer of extra fun and authenticity to the game.

Driving is even more fun than before as you can now use your car as a weapon as well as using more traditional weapons: this gives you plenty of extra combat action with explosions and crashes and more.

The Nitty Gritty

You could say that the game is an entrepreneurial start-up story, just with illegal activities and crime forming the backbone of the business! And of course, it is the criminal element that adds to the fun, even as you explore the wide city of Santo Ileso as you acquire the various districts.

As well as completing missions – which involve gun battles, car chases and brilliant cinematic moments, you can explore the world, sandbox style, and you can do it all with your own unique style on display thanks to the extremely advanced customisation tools which allows you to tailor not only yourself, but your sidekicks and your car too!

The customisation feature is intricately detailed, allowing each person to make their playing character look exactly as they want him to. Or her too, gender is also a choice. Once you have set up your gang members and your wheels, you can choose to play in one of three modes, each of which are slightly different in the way they play out. The weapons are as varied and as fun as the customisation process, so choose your favourite rocket launcher and go to it!

Single-player is as expected: you make your way in the city with AI friends helping you out as you battle to become the boss of the biggest gang in the city. Multiplayer is more like a series of not-so mini-games, a range of games that you can play with up to eleven others for a total of twelve per game. But the newly untethered co-op play is the real MVP of this game.

Untethered co-op means that the two of you can separate to explore the city on your own, but as soon as either player begins a mission, the other is pulled to them to help them out. You can also play pranks on your co-op buddy which is always entertaining as you use cars, bikes, planes and helicopters and even hoverboards and go-karts to get around and have some fun. With co-op play you can drop in and out, without affecting the game of the other player.

New Gang Members

People who are disenfranchised with their current gangs come to join you in the Saints, and they include:

Neenah: a former Los Panteros member, she is a mechanic and usually takes the wheel in any gang activity

Kevin: originally from the Idols, he is a DJ with a flare for planning that is used well in drawing up heist schedules

Eli: a start-up businessman with an MBA – so the most cutthroat of the lot! – he is devoted to helping the Saints succeed in all their ventures, helping to plan and execute gang activities
