Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus
70
Warhammer 40k is probably one of the oldest sci-fi franchises out there and the newest entry in the video game series is Mechanicus, a top down, dungeon crawler, TBS game where you control a faction of powerful cyborgs of The Imperium of Man, the Adeptus Mechanicus.

The premise is that you're on a planet that is essentially a tomb world of an alien race of....more cyborgs, but these ones look like space egyptian robot-skeletons with robot scarabs too! If you're a huge fan of the Warhammer 40k stories then this game will serve you a hefty plate of well-written text for you to read, but other than that, everything else comes down to game design.

Every mission you carry out is on a timer, that timer increases as you progress through the levels. Every level has a series of challenges to overcome, usually by defeating more Necrons. Once the mission is completed, the timer goes up and new areas need to be unlocked, then, you fight a boss, repeat until game is finished. The End

The gameplay however is much more than that. There is a definitive Darkest Dungeon / X-COM feel in this game, but the flexibility of each troop is tricky to figure out at first. The base mechanic is that if you manage your resource (Cognition Points) well then you're pretty much always going to find alternative solutions when in battle mode.

Your heroes, the Tech-Priests, can be customized and they can be trained in 6 Specializations. Multi-classes are possible and these also introduce new armor sets that be mixed and matched with weapons and gadgets to create specific classes. It's great, my only gripe with this inventory management screen is the messy UI and the way you receive upgrades, it works like this: Find item that offers 2 - 4 points of healing, then find the upgrade a mission later, but the old variant is still in the inventory. Whyyyyy?

So, if you're looking for a short romp through a decent TBS campaign then by all means go for it! The setting is fitting, the visuals are pleasing, the gameplay is there, the problem is that it's painfully short and there's no type of Free Roam/Battles mode that lets you break the game in many creative ways.

At the time of writing this review, the game will receive an expansion (named Heretek), PLUS a huge content & balance update that aims to increase the replay value of this game. The update is currently in Open BETA and any owner of this game can install it, but for me, personally, I will update this review once the expansion & patch will become available for everyone.
Warhammer: Vermintide 2
70
Vermintide 2: Electric Boogaloo is a decent FPS indie game with solid core mechanics, but don't be fooled, as the game's still in Early Access and needs a lot of work to outdo its predecessor.

I recommend you buy this game below the current asking price, preferably when a miracle patch hits the live servers. Unfortunately, FatShark Games has a proven track record of doing things too little, too late, promising development road maps, only to implement changes very late into the game's life cycle.

PRO TIPS:

- Avoid opening any "Commendation Chests" (level up reward) you might earn, until you reach Power level 600 (max level, with max level items), so that you can INCREASE your chances of earning higher quality loot/future cosmetics in the 1.1 update

- If you're currently out of friends or co-op partners, I STRONGLY ADVISE using a Discord server such as Squirrel Squad or Blood Moon Inn to find players to play with

- Sadly, the game currently has a "meta" where certain class/weapon combinations are better than most, you can try what you like, but for those interested, right now (1.0.8.1 patch LIVE), most classes are useful with the exception of Sienna's Battle Wizard that suffers from badly designed class mechanics.

- Performance may vary. The game has exceptional issues and a very intrusive Anti-Cheat system that will use up PC resources during play time. Understand that the DX12 version isn't optimized properly yet, so if you don't have a modern PC, use DX11 for best performance (NOT graphical). You can switch Shadows and other optionals (such as High Quality Fur) OFF, since you won't gain that much of a visual benefit, as much as you'll get a nasty performance dip.

REMEMBER: The game is VERY CPU intensive. If you have a weak CPU, I suggest going into the Launcher > Settings and changing the Worker Threads to 3 or 4 just to be safe. Also, if you want EASY games and have a BAD CPU, just host a game and you'll have an easier time since ALL ENEMIES use real time scripts that take up a lot of CPU power for the purposes of calculating pathing, behavior etc.
