Description

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life for PC is an action adventure game and despite the misleading title is the eighth, not the sixth, main game in the franchise. Confusingly, the games go: Yakuza, Yakuza 2, Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, Yakuza 5, Yakuza 0, then Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and finally, this game! Not to be forgetting the four spin-offs and two remakes (and that is just the Western offering: the Japanese market has many more!)

In this game, however, there is plenty for players of all skill levels, whether you are a franchise fan, or a newcomer to the world of Kazuma Kiryu, who is on his last outing here.

About the Game

The game is set in an open-world format and is played from a third-person perspective with high emphasis on over-the-top combat, with lots of beautifully engineered rag dolling to provide you with cathartic glee as you explore the surroundings! As mentioned above, Kazuma, Kiryu returns, and he is the only playable character in this game.

As well as his usual moves and combos, this time there is a variant of Dragon Spirit Mode (from Yakuza 5) which is called Extreme Heat Mode and it renders Kiryu invincible as long as his ‘heat’ lasts. As well as this, during Extreme Heat Mode, Kiryu’s usual combos are super-sized into Heat Actions that chew into an enemy’s health in no time!

The game is situated in two areas, the known and familiar (and subtly improved) Kamurocho red light district in downtown Tokyo that is the usual backdrop for the Yakuza games, and the new, more tranquil (until Kiryu arrives, anyway) area of Onomichi, which lies in the Hiroshima Prefecture, facing the Inland Sea. Action takes place in both areas as the story arc unfolds, but some substories and minigames are only playable in one location.

Realities of Gameplay

You may wonder if you are watching an anime series or playing a game at some points as the cut scenes can be very long, flowing into each other and running into lengthy minutes, up to half an hour or so at a time: but, the storyline is excellent, heart-warming, and well worth the time investment so buckle in and watch the story unfold before you get your turn to play again.

There is just one fighting style that Kiryu adopts, just as in the first games, because, presumably, it has worked for him so far and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, perhaps?

The backstory and tremendously minute detail of the whole series may seem a daunting prospect to newcomers to the series, but the developers are aware of potential issues and have planned for this. There is a reminisce feature that catches you up with any bits of backstory that you need to progress in the game, so you will be playing with an understanding of just why this guy is your enemy, and why it is so important to do what Kiryu needs to do.

While there is, of course, one overriding story arc that must be satisfactorily concluded, there are also various substories that Kiryu attends to while working towards his main story arc goals, and then there are the mini-games!

Many Mini-Games

There are a lot of mini-games to try your hand at, and the timer stops when Kiryu is working on a minigame, so you can take your time and work through as many of these as you can, as well as finding all the other ways to play through, make some yen and improve the community in your own unique Kiryu way.

  • Troublr app – this app appears on Kiryu’s phone and it alerts him to issues occurring nearby so he can intervene, sorting out random community problems and making the world a better place for a while!

  • RIZAP Gym – you should go to the gym often (shouldn’t we all?) but in this case it is not for exercise, it is because the gym is an excellent source of healing potions that easily outstrip food offerings when it comes to restoring your health. The gym offers six ‘exercise routines’ or mini games inside the mini game, each exercise gives you two types of XP in various amounts, making it a great place to hang out and take a break from killing villains

  • Mah-jong – Kiryu can take a timeout and spend some time playing a good old fashioned game of Mah-jong. Bear in mind, Mah-jong here is not the simple match-2 game played in the west, it is old school tactical oriental Mah-jong and it will tax your brain! However, if you take the time to learn it, you can make good money from your games

  • Spearfishing – this is first-person shooter game where Kiryu is underwater, blasting as many fish as he can. He must battle against boss fish at the end of each of the three rounds to win, and do not forget to shoot treasure chests when you see them, as they will give you diverse rewards. A fun and engaging way to grind some yen and have some mindless blasting fun to boot

  • Baseball – Not for the faint of heart, this is practically a full-size game in its own right! Kiryu becomes the manager of the local baseball, working with the team on improving performance, tweaking the team, and generally taking a timeout from his regular life. There is another mini game, Batting Cages, where you can practise your Baseball skills for low reward but easy improvements to your skills

  • Clan Creator – good game to boost your yen, and, again, almost strong enough to be a full game in its own right. It is a reverse tower defence game in which you battle opponents to win matches, by deploying your henchmen with the best skills. The matches are short, the rewards are tangible and this is an easy and enjoyable way to make some quick yen

  • Yakuza 6: The Song of Life for PC is available for purchase on Instant Gaming for a fraction of its retail price. You will receive an official key and be able to play the game in seconds. Play smart. Pay less.
