Description

Frostpunk for PC is a city building, survival game set in an alternate reality in the UK at around 1886 when twin volcanic eruptions (those of Tambora and Krakatoa, which occurred in real life, but in 1815 and 1883 respectively, not simultaneously) decimate the world, ruining crops in the field, darkening the sun for a time, and causing the death of millions of people all over the world.

About the Game

There are a number of scenarios to play through – see below for more information – but the premise in each scenario is similar. The player starts out as one of a small party of survivors, working to rebuild aspects of society. There are workers and engineers in the group and you are given a small amount of supplies and resources to start you off.

Players must harvest extra supplies: food, wood, steel and coal to help the fledgling society get back on their feet, despite the vagaries of an unpredictable weather system which sometimes seems to be set against the survivors’ success.

A Delicate Balance

It is possible to implement laws that will cause discontent, such as forcing workers to work twenty-four hour shifts, or making child labour laws that make youngsters work alongside adults. These laws should be used with caution and stopped as soon as possible, perhaps being balanced with more positive laws such as providing better healthcare, or allowing more food for those who need it.

Systems such as Order and Faith, provide laws and religious beliefs to assuage the population, while provisions such as workshops enable craftsmen to spring up, creating useful resources and tools for the society’s benefit.

Various Scenarios to Choose Between

  • A New Home: this is the ‘main’ story arc and the one that most players will opt for the first time they play through. An expeditionary force has left London to look for a rumoured coal reserve in the north of the country. A splinter group has become separated from the main group of explorers, and stumbles across a huge heat source in a crater. They settle there as they explore the area and find deserted city that drives home just how much trouble they’re in

  • The Arks: youthful scientists prepare a number of arks to preserve specimens of plants and crops for potential future generations to use to regenerate the earth and support the human population. They are sited near a generator hidden in a glacier, but are faced with the dilemma of choosing between aiding a nearby town that is struggling or staying on task with their arks

  • The Refugees: in this scenario, the player is the leader of a group of refugees who have sought authority over a generator originally intended for the use of wealthy groups. The player must balance the population between class rifts, aiming for a truly equal society, but finding that divides constantly arise. Fresh waves of refugees constantly arrive, in need of precious resources to keep them alive: including the now dispossessed formerly wealthy people. The player must decide to let them in or turn them away

  • The Fall of Winterholme: this DLC scenario shows the fall of a city due to mismanagement in the run up to the eruptions. The player needs to restore control and establish a sustainable flow of resources to the population – but no sooner is this achieved than he or she learns the generator powering the city is doomed to failure and must put into place and action a mass evacuation before it is too late

  • Endless mode: this scenario can last mere minutes, or it can go on for hours! You have to build a city and survive for as long as possible, fighting off enemies, harvesting and distributing resources sensibly and generally keeping society going as best you can. The game ends when your civilisation fails

  • Frostpunk for PC is available for purchase on Instant Gaming for a fraction of its retail price. You will receive an official key and be able to play the game in seconds. Play smart. Pay less.

Frostpunk combines the best elements of survival, city-building, and 4X games into one of the more captivating strategy games I’ve played in a while. Thanks to stellar presentation and storytelling, it seamlessly combines these different components into one interesting experience that never feels like a burden to play, even when the difficulty of maintaining a colony during an oppressive ice age ratchets up. Frostpunk sets the stage with a compelling and timely backstory in which climate change devastates humanity in the late 1800s. Those left alive must seek out the few remaining resources as they attempt to carve out the last city on Earth. It’s not a hopeful tale, but one that effectively communicates the challenges that lie ahead and sets the stage for some difficult and desperate decisions. This story is told through outstanding animations that help set a stark tone. Throughout, Frostpunk’s art style is effectively minimalistic and washed out, making each bit of color seem like a touch of warmth in the snow. The overall aesthetic reminded me of a Victorian Game of Thrones, complete with lots of gears and swirling snow. Likewise, the sound design and voice acting pushes the harshness of the landscape. In fact, the sound of a cold wind is the first thing that greets you when launching a new game. Though the graphics challenged my GeForce GTX 880M-powered AlienWare PC, they are bleakly beautiful. Workers carve paths in the snow as they walk, the sunrise splashes across the city, and fires illuminate the buildings around them. Menus are typically clear, though certain functions and iconography are a bit unintuitive. For instance, it took me a while to find the button to build streets. But these issues disappear after playing for an hour or so. It’s in the gameplay, though, where Frostpunk shines, mixing up bits from various familiar strategy games into something like an inverse Tropico. Rather than selfishly building power over a tropical paradise, here you make decisions for all of what remains of humanity in the midst of a frozen wasteland. Hope and discontent serve as metrics to indicate how you are doing. As the leader of this last city, the most basic task you have is to direct the workforce to gather supplies to keep the community going. This aspect plays out like most real-time city builder or survival games, and your workers will trudge through the snow to bringing coal, steel, and wood back to the city center. I appreciate that Frostpunk limits the number of resources to around five, as there is room for supply chain complexity while still avoiding burdening us with an overabundance of different types of goods. Determining how many workers to send to each stash is a decision you’ll make quite often. In fact, managing the finite number of workers is key to keeping the city going; there will never be as many of them as you’ll want or need. Also making this task difficult is a novel day/night cycle; citizens will only work during the relatively warm daylight shift.

Frostpunk is a great game. A city builder set in the late 19th century in a frostbitten world. The survival aspect constantly keeps you on your toes and makes you constantly wager effectiveness and morality against each other. Definetely a good buy.
    • Great distopian city survival game
    • One of the Best Soundtracks I have ever heard
    • Endless Mode and Situations fight Repetivity nicely
    • A bit repetitive after beating a New Home
    • Hard. Like Really Hard. Kick you while you're on the ground hard.

Just an awsome game. Close too 100 if gameplay was a bit less repetitive but they added a bunch of new stories and some gameplay to enhance the game. One of the best OST in game industry, match perfectly with the atmosphere. Very immersive game

A brutal game. Not your average RTS sim type game.
When the decent into madness begun I couldn't stop it and it was actually quite sad what was happening to my people.
I got booted in the end, I hope they survive :'(
When you get it right though, the joy that descends haha

You're the manager of your own utopia that is created with lovable steampunk graphics. To have a stable home you will need to plan ahead and calculate the materials that will be used. The possibilities are countless and the way you manage the city will also effect your little town's society. Some people will be unhappy and others will follow you, eventually you will start creating your own methods of handling those unhappy people like creating your own religion or use an army to bring order.

    • I know that the game tries hard to make players play more than a few games but for me personally after you've played 2-3 games, you might want to take a long break.

The idea is good, the game is good BUT it lacks content, a long story or a good tutorial. YET what is already has is quite a lot and enough to enjoy the game in the endless mode or scenarios it can be challenging yet satisfying.
In my opinion I can only recommend this game to players who play 'Anno' or something similar, people who like to have challenges and be satisfied hen they survive a storm.
    • good base game
    • good structure and idea
    • good base story which could be expanded

The Graphics are really good and the Story is well planned but after 2-3 hours you're done with the game.
It doesn't appear that the choices you make have such a huge inpact as hoped.
Overall I wouldn't buy the Game for the Retail price, just for the IG price.

Excellent Game although, the game play scenarios are too short, either the three of them. More scenarios will be welcome in the future without any fee since the price of the game is high regarding the duration. Also a workshop allocation would be a nice idea, following with the proper editor so much more scenarios by users could be active.
Never the less the idea of a frost world society in the Victorian age is something remarkable, the social decisions is a crucial subject that a leader must take, the entire resource gameplay is challenging but as mentioned the only negative is the time duration of the game scenarios.
    I recommend that game

    A true masterpiece.

The best management game I have ever played, everything about it is great, it could be "better" sometimes but overall it is extremely well done. Game play, sound, graphics, story, I liked every aspect of this game. It is quite challenging so hold, tight! The cold is coming for you!
    • Fantastic soundtrack
