Conqueror’s Blade is a third person perspective massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game with a fine blend of military strategy and action role playing game elements. The setting is heavily inspired by feudal systems as seen in medieval times. The action tends to be tactical rather than a slasher game, and it has a real world atmosphere to it.

About the Game

The largely open world game is centred around siege combat in which you command various units and attempt to win territory away from your opponents. You control a warlord who issues instructions to the troops, so you can see the results of your actions spreading across the map which can be really satisfying to your inner archvillain!

You will choose your warlord from eleven existing characters, and then customise it as to gender and appearance so you are completely happy with your own unique avatar. There is a good variety of weapons, which you can master, and upgrade from time to time. Two of these weapons are reserved solely for female warlords: the Dual-blade and Shortbow. This is presumably to improve engage with female avatars, as both weapons are a joy to use.

The field of play during a battle looks amazing, because each of the various units have distinct uniforms, so seeing them massed and ready for action is a colourful affair. There are five different types of battle for you to try out (see below for more details).

One man – even one warlord - can never win a war alone. This is where the tactical part of the game comes into play. You must be able to work with other warlords to arrange your troops to perform collective manoeuvres that can sway the course of the whole battle, instead of each fighting a hundred little battles alone.

The Nitty Gritty

You can wander around the world, exploring and gathering resources, crafting and battling people who challenge you to a duel – or challenge them! The game is played broadly on two fronts: you control your character warlord, and can upgrade, battle, craft and gather on a personal level, while on the other front, your NPC troops work to do your bidding on a larger scale.

This means you always have something to be getting on with, which ensures your engagement stays high. As well as commanding your troops, you have to fully outfit them, feed them, and ensure that their morale stays high, so they are fresh and willing to battle for you when you need them to.

The beginning of the game feels more like an MMORPG than anything else, as your lowly self needs to complete missions, explore the city and generally get to grips with your character, their controls, and their weapons. It is in the later levels that the more fun strategic elements are opened up to you. While this may be disappointing at first, it is actually just as well, as otherwise you could become overwhelmed with the depth and detail of the world.

Access to the tremendously fun 15v15 siege battles is also a later addition. These multiplayer games, one of the most popular modes, are challenging. Therefore, they are only made available to players who have played for long enough to have skills to survive, if not win.

Battle Types

There are five different types of battle to try out:

  • Standard Battles: in which AI (Training Camp) Battles and Field Camp battles can be found. These are games in which you try to capture flags and reduce the enemy’s points, while boosting your own. Siege Battles: these are a feature of Standard Battles, where you must capture the enemy’s final flag to win as an attacker. If you are defending, your team must be holding the last flag when the timer runs out

  • Territory Wars: a twice-weekly phenomenon. In these, Houses (which are clans, basically) can declare war on non-neutral fiefs. Once war is declared, all the House members can join the battle to defeat the targeted fief

  • Expeditions: these games involve five player teams going head to head with enemies in a formidable PvE battle. These contests are challenging but very rewarding

  • Ranked Battles: these standard matches are the main game mode, and will see your progression through the levels, allowing you to access the higher-ranked matches and weapons.

  • Events: these special occasions tend to be made up of Free Battles and Deathmatch contests

  • In all game modes, except Deathmatch games, warlords direct their units to attack, to follow or to create a specific formation on the battlefield.
