Hunt: Showdown for PC is a first person shooter game in the horror genre in which the player must hunt monsters as he or she battles for survival. The game is set in the 1890s and shows that there were more monsters about then than the grisly serial killer Jack the Ripper!

About the Game

You spawn into the world with little but your nerve and the basics, and you are given coordinates to your specific target – each player gets a different target that is their mission for the game. You are given the precise coordinates to the monster’s location, and you also receive three clues that will bring you to a point where you can defeat them.

However, it is not as clear cut as all that: following the clues can be tricky, and any noise you make will attract enemies. This can mean that your first sighting of a monster or villain and your attempts to flee, could send you right into the arms of another even more deadly monster, which will kill you happily within seconds!

Fortunately, the first fifteen levels are not subject to permadeath, so you will still have all your hard-won loot, weapons and resources (and they are scarce, so use your weaponry with great care) when you respawn until you have had enough practise to be able to survive a decent amount of time without being wiped out.

NOT a Battle Royale

Once you have killed your monster, you are only half done. You then have to retreat to a pick up point, fighting or avoiding other players as best you can. Avoiding is best – as previously mentioned, sounds attract monsters, and ammunition is a rare resource. You might be killed, and if not, all you gain is whatever they are carrying with them (which may not be much) only to have to use it all up, surviving the interest of passing beasts!

It is only by getting to the end point and essentially escaping from the game that you win, more or less the polar opposite of a Battle Royale match in which you battle it out to be the last one standing – in this you want to be the first man leaving, only under your own terms not through the aggressive decision of a fellow player or a monster!

Creatures to Beware

Set in the 1890s means one thing: primitive weapons, and you have to make do with revolvers, single shot rifles and crossbows, all of which take discernible time to reload and make ready for use. Machetes and battle-axes are ready immediately, but must be used up close and personal, while rough bombs and bear-traps can sometimes come in handy too. You are up against a plethora of monstrous villainy from across worldwide myths, including:

  • Hellhound: enormous dogs with glowing eyes, they hunt in packs of two or four, attack when provoked and have powerful jaws that cause bleeding
wounds. Oh, and they move fast and can see long distances too

  • Meathead: these hideous monsters have no heads, navigate through the leeches stuck all over their (very large) bodies and have a frighteningly powerful melee attack. They are vulnerable to explosions, and they are blind and deaf, so if you see one, tiptoe away and you might get away without harm

  • The Hive: this innocuous sounding word is used to describe a corpse possessed by a swarm of poisonous insects. They attack by sending a swarm of lethally poisonous insects at the hunters, but they can be killed if a head shot takes out the human head – usually hanging limply to one side or another

  • Water Devil: should the hunter be standing in water, listen for scary sounds and look for waving tentacles. Or just stay out of the water?

  • Armoured: these vaguely humanoid zombie-ish creatures are vulnerable to fire, but resistant to bullets and explosives, although these can chip off bits of the armour. They can move fast when they need to, so be wary

  • Grunt: more or less traditional zombies, these monsters are prevalent throughout the game and will use weaponry against you. Put them down with head shots only

  • Hunt: Showdown for PC is available for purchase on Instant Gaming for a fraction of its retail price. You will receive an official key and be able to play the game in seconds. Play smart. Pay less.
