Skyrim Special Edition for PC is a remastered version of the highly popular action role-playing game from Bethesda and it represents the fifth edition of the fantasy game. The Skyrim games (the Elder Scroll series) are multi award-winning games known for their open world play, immensely detailed worlds and free-form gameplay that allow the player to drive the action, and to a certain extent, the story.

About the Game

Alduin the World Eater is the central antagonist in this game, a massive dragon who is prophesied to end the world. The action takes place in the world of Skyrim, specifically in the northernmost province of Tamriel. The player must work to increase his or her characters strengths and abilities, while working their way across the map.

There is no urgency to complete the main story arc, so players can explore the whole map and focus on character building before returning to pick up the threads of the storyline and work to defeat Alduin.

What to Do

The player can play from a first-person or third-person perspective, exploring the richly detailed world which includes wilderness areas, towns and cities – both large and small, fortresses and small rural villages. Players can fast travel to cover large distances quickly, or they can ride horses to explore regions fairly quickly but in detail.

While the storyline can be ignored until the player is ready to continue along that path, some quests do rely on the story having progressed a certain amount, so players might need to dip in and out of narrative play if they want to solve quests in a certain order.

You can, if you want to, race to complete the story arc to ensure that all the areas are unlocked, and then go back and do some explorations.
Whichever way you choose to play, the game is highly deserving of many hours’ attention as you explore, quest and battle your way through the intensely detailed land.

The Importance of Being NPC

NPCs (non-playing characters) are largely interactive and players can choose to befriend, romance and marry, fight with and even kill them. Some NPCs are important to the storyline and cannot be killed until they have played their part, while others can be killed, but their death then locks some of the content from the player: clues and information that they would have offered the player being inaccessible after their demise.

Behaving in an immoral way – killing NPCs etc – can rachet up your infamy, and putting a bounty on your head. Should you be stopped by guards when there is a price on your head, you can be jailed, pay a handsome fine (or bribe) in gold to prevent this, or you can resist arrest, running away and evading the guards.

This last action will, however, trigger a vigorous pursuit on the part of the guards, and may make life a bit exciting for your character until they can get out of their range.

Three DLCs for You

The Special Edition comes with access to three DLC story arcs, as follows:

  • Dawnguard: Join or resist the Vampire uprising. Lord Harkon, a vampire lord, wants to use an Elder Scroll to darken the sun, thereby allowing vampires to roam the world freely, at any time, night or day

  • Hearthfire: Perfect for those who love crafting, this DLC lets you build yourself a home, from a basic one-room shack, all the way up to the most sumptuous mansion. Using crafting stations and work benches to your hearts’ content, and then, once your home is ready, adopt some children to make the house into a real home

  • Dragonborn: Travel off the Morrowind to the island of Solstheim where you will meet your deadliest adversary ever: the Dragonborn. The Dragonborn have the body of mortals but the souls of Dragons and they are thought to be the only beings who can defeat Alduin. The fate of the world (and yourself) lies in the outcome of this encounter!

Legendary game. I'm writing a long review because instant gaming wants it but really, what can I say that anybody's not aware of ? Insane longevity, good stories and characters, incredible gameplay and design. A game from 2011 which still holds up to this day, and with mods it's even better. Would recommend buying the special edition for people who will buy this game for the first time, since the review here is for the original (also called Oldrim). Do no buy the anniversary edition but the special edition.

Skyrim has been my favorite game since 2016, when I played it at first. Now a days I heard about wabbajck, a modding pack list that will install thousands of mods to your game with a couple clicks and leave it looking as if it had come out in 2024. And so far I'm loving the replay.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is one of those rare games that manages to feel timeless, even after more than a decade since its original release. This upgraded version brings the legendary open-world RPG into a more modern era with enhanced visuals, improved stability, and the added benefit of console mod support, making it a fantastic way for both new players and returning adventurers to experience one of the most influential games ever made.

The first thing you notice when starting Skyrim Special Edition is the upgraded graphical presentation. While the game doesn't look like a brand-new title built for today’s highest-end hardware, the improvements are noticeable and make a meaningful difference to immersion. The lighting is more natural, water reflections are more realistic, and textures generally look sharper across the world. The landscapes—already a strong point in the original—feel more alive and atmospheric. Details like mist rolling through mountain valleys, sunlight filtering through trees, and the glow of torches in dark dungeons all contribute to a richer sense of place. Even if you’ve played the original Skyrim countless times, the Special Edition’s visual refinements make the world feel fresh again.

Performance is another major improvement. The Special Edition runs more smoothly and with fewer crashes than the original release, especially on consoles. Load times are better, transitions between areas feel quicker, and the game is overall more stable—important for a title that encourages you to explore everywhere, gather everything, and interact with nearly every object in the environment. If you played Skyrim back in the day and remember occasional freezes or glitches, you’ll be pleased to find the Special Edition far more reliable in long play sessions.

One of the most appealing aspects of this edition is the official mod support, now available on consoles as well as PC. Mods drastically expand what the game can offer, from visual improvements and new weapons to full questlines and gameplay overhauls. Even simple tweaks—like better weather, new armor sets, or improved companions—can enhance the experience significantly. For players who love customizing their games, Skyrim Special Edition provides an enormous sandbox of possibilities. This feature alone adds hundreds of potential hours of replay value.

Of course, the heart of Skyrim Special Edition remains its gameplay, which has held up impressively well. The freedom the game offers is still unmatched: you can follow the main story, become an assassin, join the mages, fight as a warrior, wander as a thief, or ignore all quests entirely and just explore the wilderness. The world rewards curiosity, whether you stumble upon a hidden cave, discover a new spellbook, or run into a group of NPCs whose lives tell small stories around the edges of the game. The combat system is simple but satisfying, and the dragon encounters retain their epic flair even after dozens of hours.

Skyrim’s soundtrack deserves special mention as well. Jeremy Soule’s iconic orchestral score sets the emotional tone for every moment, from peaceful exploration to dramatic battles. Even players who haven’t touched the game in years can instantly recognize the powerful main theme.

While Skyrim Special Edition isn’t a brand-new game, and some aspects—like character animations or certain dialogue interactions—feel dated today, the overall experience is still incredibly engaging. Few RPGs offer a world this expansive, dynamic, and replayable. For newcomers, this version is the best way to experience one of gaming’s most beloved titles. For returning fans, it’s a polished, stable, and beautifully enhanced way to rediscover old adventures or create entirely new ones.

In short, Skyrim Special Edition remains a must-play. Its combination of open-world freedom, atmospheric world-building, and nearly endless customization makes it a game that continues to inspire players old and new alike.

Took a whole day to jump through the hoops, download this, steam,,,,, then the game didn't work. Couldn't drop stuff and other features would not work. I had to delete the GAME, STEAM and the whole load of BS. I'll be contacting my card company, can't believe I just went through that or anyone would.

After all these years I eventually come back to this game. I've played Skyrim on PS3, PS4, PS5 and now on PC. Its genuinely a masterpiece from the open world to the quests its simply amazing and still holds up to this day.

There are bad things as I've listed however all of these can be bypassed by the mod's the community have made for this game. The only one that can't is the main story but its still a passable narrative but after 13-ish years of playing this game you start to see the flaws in it.

Overall the game is a Solid 9.8/10 and will forever have a place in my childhood.
