Factorio for PC is a construction and management simulation game. Fun fact for you: the game actually has a new species of scorpion named for it! It was discovered by the game developer’s dad, and he named it for his son’s creation, forever linking the two for posterity – a pretty cool dad gift by any standards!
What’s the Story?
You take on the character of an engineer who has crash landed on a planet, and your ultimate goal is to build a spacecraft that will enable you to either leave the planet or summon help – but you can take your time completing this task and fully explore the world before you take your man home. You can play single-player, co-op mode or multiplayer, depending on your needs.
Unlike most resource gathering, crafting games, this game needs to make huge quantities of items, so instead of doing the hard work yourself, your job is to layout rows upon rows of factories, each crafting the parts you need to make other goods – you can even make factories to make the component parts of more factories! You could say that instead of crafting, you set up crafting processes.
If this sounds confusing, do not worry, there is a good detailed tutorial that will talk you through everything you need to know to get started on the way to serious factory farming without stress or frustration.
Not all Industrial Though
The planet was not entirely free of inhabitants, and there are three type of animal/ creature living on the planet. They are called Biters, Spitters, Worms, and are usually peaceful – except when pollution from your factories poisons their food and water! They will attack, becoming more vicious, the worse your pollution is!
You can deal with them in two ways – manage your pollution by producing less, or you can build defences to keep the beasts out, or even kill them off – even these defences can benefit from your automation processes and you can enjoy automatic combat!
How to Build a Factory
There are three main components for building a factory and which need to be placed appropriately and in the right numbers to achieve your desired purpose:
Conveyor belts – carry the raw materials from where you are mining them, bringing them to the factory ready for the next stage
Assemblers – these make the fiddly bits of your factory and churn out all the parts you need
Inserters – these clever automated processes fit the parts made by the assemblers together to create the product you need
You can create factory processes for anything – even for making the parts needed to build more factories, until you get into a position where expansion is inevitable and almost effortless!
