I don't know much about the recent games but I do know and played countless hours back in early 2000's with it and all that era games.
I still play with it every year a 50-100hours. I don't do much different since a decade ago, so I guess it's repayable anytime for me:)

- Playable different races
- Skirmish game available
- Units look different
- All races buildings are same
- Al dump, harder lvl means more costs instead of smarter opponents
- Multiplayer wouldn't work
