Star Wars: The Old Republic is an MMORPG based in the Star Wars universe. A tentative peace has broken out between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic, and the game takes place shortly after this agreement has been brokered.
About the Game
However familiar the universe, do not expect to see your favourite characters from the movie: the events of the movies are still some 3,600 years in the future. Despite the agreed peace between their peoples, the Sith are plotting the downfall of the Republic and aiming to expand their own empire, as might be expected of those who love power above all else.
As well as various classes there are a number of races on both sides of the Sith Empire/ Galactic Republic divide. Those playing on either side can be human, cyborg, Twi’lek, or Zabrak. The appearances of these peoples change depending on which side they are on. Republic-only characters are Miraluka and Mirialan while Empire-only species are Chiss, Rattataki and Sith pureblood.
It is worth mentioning that Humans and Zabrak can play as any of the classes, while the others are all restricted to a few of the classes, or even just one.
As the player, you can play as a member of the Sith or remain loyal to the Republic, as you like, and you can choose your own point of morality anywhere along the light-dark spectrum. You do not have to choose dark morality as a Sith, and nor do you have to be morally upright as a Republican fighter, which allows a surprising amount of nuance into the game.
The Nitty Gritty
There are 8 classes, each class following a unique three-act storyline as the game progresses. You will want to replay this game because each class offers an entirely storyline. As if that was not enough, along each storyline you can take the time out for PvP missions (space and regular), multiplayer flashpoints (hour long mission-driven narratives that crescendo to an exciting finale), and space missions and raids before returning to play along your story arc.
Your character is fully customisable with plenty of options available to you. The NPCs are richly enacted and voiced and there are plenty of cinematic moments to keep you saying ‘wow’ as you play through those familiar worlds. You also get an AI companion who keeps you company, interacts with you, backs you up and who can be set to support you in any way you like.
The sound tracks are fantastic and fans will be delighted to recognise music from the movies and authentic sound effects for the spaceships, light-sabres and heavy blasters. The game lends itself well to players of all abilities, with the early levels easy enough to advance through, with little need for grinding, while the later levels offer enough challenge for even the most advanced players.
Is That a Spaceship?
As might be expected from a space fantasy, there are some wonderful space ships among the various classes and groups of people. There are parts of each ship that can be upgraded to boost your powers and abilities.
D5 Mantis Patrol Craft is favoured by Bounty Hunters
Sith Warriors and Inquisitors have the brilliantly named Fury
X-70B are used by the Imperial Agents
XS Freighter are specialities of smugglers because of their spacious holds
BT7 Thunderclap is the chosen craft of the troopers
Defenders are appropriate vehicles for Jedi Knights and Jedi Consultants
Star Wars: The Old Republic takes fans of the series into the distant past of that galaxy far, far away, but also welcomes novices who wouldn’t know a Wookie from C3PO’s silver knee!
