I am so happy I gave this game a chance.

At first, I was put off because of complaints about the combat system — I even started playing with mods because of that. But I realized it just takes a little time to get into. I turned off the mods and I absolutely LOVE the game, combat included.

In my opinion, this game is awesome, and most criticism boils down to either "It's not your kind of game" or "You didn't give it the chance it deserves".

That said, there are some flaws worth mentioning. The game does not communicate how it is meant to be played. That is part of its charm, I get it — but it makes it harder to approach.

How I think most players should approach this game

Difficulty

If you are not explicitly looking for a challenge, start on one of the lower action difficulties. Even consider the lowest if you tend to get stressed easily — no shame in that. You will strengthen your character across playthroughs and can raise the action difficulty once you have a feel for the combat. Puzzle difficulty is less important in my opinion; some puzzles are just different on higher settings, and only rarely actually harder.

Combat

Do not play this like a hack-and-slash — that will only frustrate you. Be patient and learn each enemy's attack pattern. There is always a window where your attacks will land. Watch for counter opportunities, as they are very powerful. Combat is strategic and resource-based: when your stamina runs low, disengage and recover. Some weapon types suit certain enemies better — knives and sickles are fast and beginner-friendly, while heavy weapons shine in specific situations. Also, consider simply running past enemies; you do not always have to fight, and anything you miss can be found on a subsequent playthrough. Combat becomes much more comfortable as you unlock abilities: in-combat healing, reduced weapon durability loss, automatic counters, stronger attacks, shorter focus attack wait times, and more.

After your first playthrough

Head to the main menu and check the View Endings section — it will give you the guidance you need to continue. A word of caution: there are hidden rooms to discover, and looking them up online risks spoilers. It is better to ask someone who has already played, or even ask an AI for a spoiler-free hint. In my own case, I missed a secret room in my second playthrough and ended up locked out of an alternate ending.

Japanese voice-over

Absolutely worth it. Fair warning though: on higher difficulties, the subtitles can be hard to read during boss fights. :P

Is this game for you?

- Are you drawn to Japanese culture in some way?

- Do you enjoy psychological horror that slowly reveals its meaning piece by piece?

- Do you like a challenging combat system — maybe even souls-like games?

- Are you a Silent Hill fan who is open to a story unconnected from the previous games?

Honestly, I sadly expected way better, and I felt that during my playthrough. It's super cool, nice aesthetics, good music but it just felt rushed in my opinion

not as good as silent hill 2 but still a great game

Though the combat system makes some of the gameplay portions pretty frustrating, this game is an amazing horror that deserves to be called Silent Hill. The artistic choices, both in how the story is written and how it is told, show a coherent work throughout the entire game. I'd give it a 7.6.
  • Artistically amazing
  • Great narrative and story
  • Incredible sound design
  • A combat system that is frustrating most of the time
  • Pretty easy puzzles

It is a different take on a Silent Hill game. I really enjoying it I thinks longtime fans will also.
  • New Silent Hill.
  • Nothing.

Was not going to get this game, cause I hate puzzles, but than I read an interview and the Author of Higurashi No Koro Ni was invited to direct the games story... I just had to get it now.

Most people are quick to jump the gun at it not being SilentHill esque... but I'm ok with carring my pippe around and smack dolls.

Quite happy how it turned out.
  • Hey they actually have a Puzzle slider to make it harder or easier.
  • feels somewhat less horror intense, which means more players will finish it.
  • Multiple Endings, its worth see the story changing everytime you beat it
  • More Action and less Walking, no Guns, lots of Melee(maybe should be a PRO?)
  • Weapons Break, limited inventory space, no "autosaves"
  • Dark Souls Style gameplay (slow, methodical and punishing)

The games starts slow, but never picks up the pace till the end, wehere it feels extremly rushed. The combat is also really bad. About 2/3 through the game I was done and change to story difficulty. With how clunky fighting feels difficult feels far to heavy, while story is far to easy. Especially with all the loot you get on story. Countering feels also of. Had many situations where the counter just didnt work at all or the main character got her weapon stuck on the wall, which made me take a hit or getting grabbed by and opponent. getting grabbed instantly takes of halve your health (on difficult) and a good chunk of your mana (sanity or whatever its called in english). Story was ok, but the cutscenes feld really "cringy" mostly. Maybe its just the english voice acting, but still. Puzzles were either super easy or brainsmashingly hard. there is just no balance in the game. the difficulty always feels of. It took me about 12h to finish this game. Meanwhile I only had around 7h of actual "playtime" registered while saving the game. The rest were propably cutscenes. Also Cutscenes are locked at 30 fps which just kills the flow of the game. Would you have fun running away from "something" while getting 3-4 cutscenes inbetween at 30 fps? No? Neither did I. it just completly pulls you out of the game. Performance was OKish for an UE5 game. But why did they use an old DLSS version and no working framegen? Had to use DLSS swapper and NVIDIA fluent motion to make this game feel smooth at least. Overall I was really disapointed. All the hype around a new silent hill and we get a half backed game with mediocre performance, mediocre story and a terrible combat system. Overall I cant recommand it, unless its heavyly reduced.
  • Atmosphere
  • Overall graphic
  • Mediocre Story Telling
