Description

Heroes of the Storm is a MOBA (massively online battle arena) game that brings together over 90 heroes and villains from games like: Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, Overwatch and more, so you can choose your favourites to play as. One character, the two-headed ogre mage Cho’Gall, is designed to be played by two people, each controlling one head and its attendant powers – this can be a fantastic hero or a hilarious disaster depending on how well the players work together!

About the Game

You are put into a teams with 4 others, and you survive or perish together, with all of you earning the same amount of XP, no matter how skilled or not you may be. Every hero starts each match at level zero, but you can soon upgrade yourself in order to tackle bigger and tougher enemies.

Each team member has a ‘lane’ that is theirs, and ensuring that someone from your team is in each lane in order to maximise the points won across the board is a good way to get ahead. Each hero has a set of three skills, all geared towards the ultimate goal of knocking down the opposition’s tower and stop them from knocking down yours.

Your recovery time – also known as ability cooldown – is quite a short period, so you never really feel too exposed on the battlefield, being ready to go again in just seconds. Each map has a unique objective that can dramatically overturn the game’s progress – which, if you are losing can work in your favour – but be wary of leaving your lane, which you will pretty much always need to do to gain these objectives!

For example, one of the maps has a sublevel where you can explore dungeons and gather skulls. These skulls are then transformed into a massive golem who can crunch the opposition – the more skulls the bigger the golem will be!

All these objectives are timed and follow pre-set patterns and are a refreshing break, especially if your opposition team is annihilating yours, from the main game – and they can result in a stunning upset, allowing you to sweep the victory from the rear of the field, if you play it right.

The Nitty Gritty

In the beginning you can only play in three game modes, but more are added in later levels, after you have levelled up and earned more experience: enough to hold your own against other experienced players.

In general, you must stay in your lane to get the maximum experience points, but get out of lane to have fun, achieve objectives, and sometimes simply to dodge overwhelming minion waves!

The game is easy to pick up as you play through, with individual battles being relatively short at 20 minutes or so. Once the battle is over, you can turn around quickly and get back into another game with as little downtime as you like.

Initial Modes of Play

  • AI training matches: these games work as tutorials to get you up to speed for the other modes

  • Custom private games: you can set up a private lobby for up to 5x5 players (ten friends altogether), with various options available to be toggled on or off as desired

  • Quickmatch: in this mode, you are thrown together with anyone who is around, which sometimes lands you in the perfect team, but also sometimes results in your team having too many healers and not enough attackers or vice versa. It all depends on who else is waiting to team up. This is the place to gain the most XP and get promoted to the next level of games which happens when you reach level 30, from where you can join the hero league

  • Heroes of the Storm is said to be a MOBA for people who don’t like MOBAs – or, at least, for those who don’t know yet that they absolutely love them!
