The best zombie games in 2025

As in cinema and pop culture in general, zombies have become an absolute must in video games. While Resident Evil is without a hint of doubt the license that popularized the survival-horror genre, the famous putrid creatures have always (or almost always) been present in the gaming sphere. So much so, in fact, that it's hard to be totally exhaustive when it comes to compiling the best zombie games of the moment.

First things first, you don't necessarily have to be playing a horror game to come across our beloved undead. For example, Plants vs. Zombies makes a running gag of the theme by pitting plants against zombies in a tower defense title that hasn't aged a day. Of course, there are more legendary and polished zombie games out there that are well worth discovering.

There are plenty of AAA titles that pit us against zombies. Bend Studio's open world adventure Days Gone comes to mind, taking us on a roadtrip through a beautiful, monster-filled state of Oregon in the USA. The hordes in display here are absolutely incredible. And what can we say about the remake of Resident Evil 2, which takes a cult zombie game and elevates it with to new heights?

The zombies can also be an opportunity to tell a great story. When it comes to this, it's almost impossible to beat season 1 of The Walking Dead by Telltale Games. This game brought tears to the eyes of a whole generation of gamers, despite its rudimentary point & click gameplay. But very often, studios use this horrific context to create experiences that quickly veer into the fun, putting pedal to the metal and going for an extra dose of cheese.

Dead Island 2 is a perfect example of this, with its strong sense of humor and swimsuit-clad zombies in a California that's as sunny as it is apocalyptic. We can't just forget the excellent Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, and offers us some totally wacky weapons for slaughtering monsters in style! As for Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse, we play as the zombie boss himself!

Zombie games are also a great opportunity for some terribly fun coop experiencias, with the like of Left 4 Dead 2, State of Decay 2, Killing Floor 2 and 7 Days to Die bringing a dose of adrenalin and laughter altogether to the table. Last but not least, we have games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Red Dead Redemption that do not hesitate to use zombies as an excuse to create a game mode and an expansion respectively that have made history.
