The best games developed by Nintendo

For more than twenty years, Nintendo has been shaping modern video gaming by creating a wealth of memorable experiences that appeal to both casual gamers and the most demanding enthusiasts. Through a whole host of consoles, the Japanese manufacturer has successfully revamped its iconic franchises while also launching new titles that have often become must-haves as soon as they hit the market. In this article, we offer a selection of major Nintendo games, mainly from the last 15 years, so that they appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Chosen for their quality, their impact, or their ability to embody the unique spirit of the brand... let's discover them without further ado.

It is one of the big winners in terms of popularity in recent years. Originally released on Nintendo Switch before being ported fairly recently to the new Switch 2, we are of course talking about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It represents a major turning point for the company. With a completely open world, advanced physical interactions, and a constant sense of adventure, it is a game that has redefined expectations for the genre.

In a completely different vein, we have Super Mario Odyssey, which also shook the conventions of the franchise. It's one of the best 3D platform games ever designed in its era. Each world is bursting with ideas, and the capture mechanic brings constant renewal to the gameplay. Let's stick with the red and blue plumber with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Excellent tracks, perfect balance, and instant fun, whether playing solo or multiplayer... this racing experience is probably the best ever created in the franchise. For those who are more comfortable with direct confrontations, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate offers colossal content and fairly technical gameplay. It brings together the entire history of Smash in a game that is both accessible and competitive.

Let's now move away from the big franchises to some slightly less mainstream offerings. Metroid Dread on Switch marks the triumphant return of Metroid in 2D. It features fast-paced gameplay, constant tension, and modern staging for a cult franchise. For something a little more colorful, we turn to Splatoon 2. It's a refreshing take on competitive shooters, with a unique style and accessible but strategic gameplay.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a deep and narrative-driven tactical RPG. The player's choices really influence the story, and the characters are among Nintendo's best written. A real gem! Of course, we can't forget to mention Xenoblade Chronicles, available on Wii and in Definitive Edition on Switch. It's an ambitious and epic JRPG. It's set in vast worlds, with a memorable soundtrack and powerful storytelling that have left a lasting impression on players.

Finally, and as many of you are surely expecting, let's talk about the Pokémon franchise. Developed primarily by Gamefreak, it has become a staple of Nintendo, and even of video games in general. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, originally released on DS and then remastered on Switch, marks the transition to a new, more ambitious generation. It features a striking region, a rich mythology, and mechanics that were modernized for the time. More recently, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the franchise's first open-world games, achieved very good sales figures. Another strength of this installment is that it introduces a whole new variety of dual-type Pokémon, which were still underrepresented in the franchise.

This selection, ranging from the Nintendo DS to the Switch, also demonstrates Nintendo's ability to evolve its historic licenses while taking risks with new offerings. These games are not only excellent experiences when they are released: they leave a lasting impression, influence other creators, and continue to be played and recommended today. More than just a catalog of successes, they testify to the uniqueness of a publisher that, decade after decade, still manages to surprise without ever losing its identity.
