The best survival games of 2026

2026 promises to be an exceptional year for survival game enthusiasts. After a decade in which the genre exploded in popularity with titles combining exploration, resource management, cooperation, and narrative immersion, independent studios and major franchises alike are preparing a new wave of unforgettable adventures. Here is a selection of the most eagerly awaited titles that could well define the year for virtual survivalists.

While *Subnautica 2 is undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited survival game of 2026... The highly anticipated sequel to an iconic first installment, the title aims to immerse players in a new alien ocean filled with strange creatures and breathtaking landscapes. For the first time in the franchise, the game includes a cooperative mode for up to four players, promising multiplayer underwater survival that disrupts the usual experience of the series.

Whisper of the Swallows is the only title in our selection that is already available. The first game from a French-speaking studio, it allows players to build complex structures using a piece-by-piece construction system. The worlds are procedurally generated, and the environment poses the greatest threat: players must survive extreme and dynamic weather conditions.

Available on February 16, Astrobotanica is a cooperative scientific survival game. Here, survival depends less on combat than on botany, experimentation, and cooperation in a hostile prehistoric world. You play as an alien biologist who must cultivate, explore, analyze, and interact with the flora and fauna in order to survive. For something quite similar, check out Honeycomb: The World Beyond. The originality of this game lies in its bioengineering and experimentation aspect, which introduces a new way to survive by manipulating life itself.

Road to Vostok is a hardcore solo survival game where every decision can be costly. Immersed in a post-apocalyptic zone between Finland and Russia, you'll have to loot, plan, survive hostile factions, and traverse deadly areas... all while facing the dilemma of permanent death. For a greener experience, Away from Life offers survival on a desert island after surviving a helicopter crash. Listen to the sound of the waves and birdsong!

Finally, we haven't forgotten those who love to drive. Outbound is an open-world exploration game set in a near-future utopia. You start with an empty camper van, which you can upgrade to turn it into your dream home, either alone or with friends. You'll also need to develop different technologies to ensure an efficient food supply.

It's clear that 2026 is shaping up to be a great year for survival games... and this is only our first article on the subject. Between eagerly awaited sequels and original narrative experiences, gamers will have plenty to immerse themselves in with a variety of challenging and immersive titles. Check out our full selection below, and get your survival kits ready: you might need them!
