The best video game bosses (Part 2)

When it comes to video games, the best bosses aren't just mere obstacles: they often crystallize the very soul of a game. Be it charismatic, terrifying, or tragic, these adversaries leave a lasting impression on players through their design, their story, or their gameplay. In this second article dedicated to the best video game bosses out there, we're going to explore a selection of iconic enemies from cult franchises.

Let’s begin our second selection with Malenia from Elden Ring, who pushes the player to their limits while embodying a very strong combat identity. Her mobility, grace, brutality, and ability to recover health with every strike make her an immediately unique opponent. Still among the essentials, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII Remake is a video game icon, blending mystery, power, and an almost divine aura. In the remake, his omnipresence reinforces his role as an inevitable threat. His battle is spectacular, both visually and musically, symbolizing a confrontation against a nearly inescapable force.

Let’s move to a very different universe to talk about Darth Malak, the archetype of the tragic villain in the Star Wars universe. A former ally turned enemy, he embodies corruption through power and moral downfall. His final confrontation is particularly memorable thanks to his use of captive Jedi to regenerate, forcing the player to think strategically while confronting his past. From the game of the same name, the god Hades is a fascinating boss because he is both an antagonist and a father figure. Each fight against him is intense, but also narratively rich, as his dialogue evolves with each attempt.

A bit of cel-shading with Borderlands 2 and its iconic boss Handsome Jack, a brilliant antagonist thanks to his writing. Charismatic, sassy, and deeply cruel, he accompanies the player throughout the adventure via his dialogue. More than just a final boss, he is a constant presence, making the final confrontation particularly satisfying. Moon Lord from Terraria is a spectacular and demanding boss, considered one of the ultimate challenges of the game. His cosmic design and complex mechanics force players to fully master their equipment and reflexes.

Out of the must-play The Witcher 3 we have the Leshen, a boss that stands out for its atmosphere. Inspired by Slavic folklore, it embodies the terror of ancient forests. Each encounter with it is oppressive, thanks to its ability to control nature and appear unpredictably. Finally, Laxasia from Lies of P is a memorable fight because both its difficulty and presentation. Her fast and brutal style, combined with an impressive mid-fight transformation, makes it a remarkable challenge. She perfectly embodies the demands and intensity characteristic of the soulslike genre.

Ultimately, the best video game bosses are not defined solely by their difficulty, but by the emotions they evoke and the mark they leave behind. Tragic figures, charismatic tyrants, or mysterious entities, they enrich the gaming experience by giving meaning to each confrontation. And if one thing is certain, it’s that players will remember these epic battles for a long time.
