Fighting games hold a special place in the medium. Spectacular, demanding, and often deeply technical, the genre relies on a unique balance of reflexes, strategy, reading your opponent, and mastery of the mechanics. From arcade cabinets to esports tournaments, the genre has constantly evolved, giving rise to several subgenres: traditional versus fighting, anime-inspired arena fighters, tactical games, brawlers, and even hybrid simulations. In this article, we present an initial selection of notable titles in this field. Round 1!
Mortal Kombat 11 remains a benchmark for its precise combat system, generous content, and unapologetically brutal identity. Its iconic Fatalities, solid roster, and accessible yet deep mechanics make it an excellent entry point as well as a great competitive game. Its sense of spectacle remains unmatched.
Alongside it, two other franchises shine with their latest entries. Tekken 8 represents the pinnacle of modern 3D fighting. Its Heat system energizes the battles, its character roster is solid, and its technical depth is immense. For its part, Street Fighter 6 manages the feat of being both accessible to newcomers and exciting for veterans. Its Drive system revitalizes strategy, its netcode is excellent, and its World Tour mode offers a truly original experience.
Though slightly less well-known but just as good, other titles are solid and well worth checking out. Dead or Alive 5 Last Round stands out in particular for its interactive arenas. Often underrated, the series nevertheless offers technical and highly satisfying gameplay. Already drawing attention thanks to its tag-team format, 2XKO features gameplay designed for competition and leverages Riot Games’ expertise in competitive gaming.
Inspired by anime, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero focuses on massive, spectacular battles. Its huge roster and arena fighter style make it a love letter to Dragon Ball fans. The same goes for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, which earns its spot thanks to enjoyable mechanics that enrich the battles. It’s an excellent game for those who love technical fighters with a strong identity.
For a slightly more hybrid and original combat experience, check out Sifu. It’s not a classic versus fighter, but its martial arts-inspired gameplay, learning curve, and intensity make it one of the best single-player combat experiences. A different kind of experience awaits players in For Honor, where you experience the chaos of war through various fighters from different backgrounds. Finally, WWE 2K26 represents the simulation/entertainment side of combat, with a well-known universe tied to professional wrestling.
It’s clear that fighting games don't just follow a single formula. Whether they’re technically demanding, spectacular, or accessible and original, it’s precisely this diversity that makes the genre so rich. From long-standing franchises to new contenders emerging generation after generation, one thing is certain: the genre isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. See you soon in Part 2!
