At a time when blockbusters still tend to steal the spotlight a bit too much, many titles unfairly fly under the radar despite their undeniable qualities. This selection highlights underrated video games, whether because they haven’t yet achieved the success they deserve, or because the scores they’ve received are, in our opinion, a bit low. Let’s get started!
Still overshadowed by its main competitor, Grounded, which has enjoyed much greater visibility, Smalland reimagines the survival genre with a simple yet effective concept: navigating a gigantic world from an insect’s perspective. Exploration is highly immersive thanks to its natural environments, the presence of human factions, numerous mounts, and a dynamic weather system that truly shapes your progress and exploration. Let’s stay on the small side with the game Empire of the Ants, which adapts the universe of Bernard Werber’s book into a technically impressive strategy game. The game focuses on a realistic depiction of the miniature world and particularly immersive tactical battles.
In a much more narrative-driven genre, Banishers: Ghost of a New Eden is a DON’T NOD production that blends combat, supernatural investigation, and moral choices. The duo of protagonists works perfectly thanks to solid writing and a touching relationship. The game shines above all for its dark atmosphere and decisions with significant consequences. Meanwhile, Escape from Ever After reimagines fairy tales in a satirical and offbeat RPG. Its colorful universe hides a surprisingly inventive adventure, driven by omnipresent humor and original mechanics.
Let’s now move on to titles offering significantly more action. Godbreakers is an explosive mix of cooperative hack-and-slash, ultra-fast-paced combat, and spectacular abilities. Its intense pace is reminiscent of certain particularly addictive arcade-style action RPGs. Absolum blends beat ’em up and roguelite in a highly stylized fantasy world. The game captivates with its dynamism and hand-drawn art style.
While everyone knows Minecraft, few have ventured into its hack-and-slash spin-off. Behind its familiar appearance, Minecraft Dungeons hides addictive gameplay, perfect for co-op. The game successfully simplifies the conventions of the dungeon crawler without compromising them. Finally, The Outlast Trials is likely among the best horror games to date, even though the title is still in early access. Its psychological horror, oppressive atmosphere, unsettling challenges, and remarkable sound design make for a particularly effective horror experience.
This selection proves that you don’t need to be a massive blockbuster to deliver a memorable experience. Whether through original worlds, innovative gameplay, or striking art direction, these games showcase the richness of today’s gaming landscape. Will you give one of these games a try?
