The goriest videogames (part 2)

The goriest videogames (part 2)

Gore-filled video games are as fascinating as they are disturbing. With realistic dismemberment, nightmarish creatures, spectacular bloodshed, and oppressive psychological violence, some titles deliberately push the boundaries of the medium to deliver intense experiences. Here is a second selection of games that stand out for their graphic violence, visceral horror, or unapologetic brutality.

With its first-person perspective, Resident Evil 7 plunges the player into a horror far more visceral than previous installments. The mutilations, detailed injuries, and particularly repulsive organic monsters make certain scenes hard to forget. The oppressive atmosphere further amplifies the impact of the gore, enough to turn the stomachs of even the most sensitive souls.

The zombie dismemberment doesn’t stop there, as Dead Island 2 takes dismemberment to an impressive technical level thanks to its extremely detailed body destruction system. Flayed skin, torn flesh, and exposed organs are at the heart of the gameplay. Despite its very gory nature, the tone remains deliberately fun and exaggerated. The Last of Us Part II isn’t bad in its own right either. The realism of the animations and impacts makes the game’s violence particularly shocking. The combat features detailed injuries, very graphic executions, and constant emotional violence.

Alan Wake 2 is an exceptional game that blends psychological horror with visually disturbing scenes. Mutilated bodies, macabre environments, and unsettling creatures heighten the constant tension. Modern graphical realism greatly amplifies the impact of the most violent scenes. In the brutal universe of Warhammer 40K, battles are extremely bloody. The Space Marine literally slices through hordes of Orks and alien enemies in savage hand-to-hand combat. The executions are massive, violent, and perfectly in line with the franchise’s war-torn universe.

Probably one of Rockstar’s most controversial games, Manhunt features slow, gruesome, and extremely violent executions carried out using everyday objects. Its disturbing and realistic atmosphere has earned it several bans and controversies around the world. Billed as a return to pure psychological horror, Silent Hill f already seems to be leaning toward disturbing and grotesque bodily visions. Organic transformations, mangled bodies, and a deeply unsettling atmosphere have always been central to the series, reinforcing its psychological unease.

Of course, Kratos isn't an stranger to all this. Throughout various installments of the series, such as God of War III and God of War Ragnarök, our mythological antihero reaches new heights of brutality. The executions of gods and creatures from Greek mythology are particularly savage: dismemberments, skull-crushings, and monumental bloodbaths. These scenes are among the most violent and spectacular to witness.

Gore in video games isn’t limited to simply seeking visual shock value. In some titles, it serves to heighten the horror, underscore the brutality of a universe, or provide a cathartic and spectacular moment. This new selection demonstrates that graphic violence can take very different forms depending on the developers’ intentions. One thing is certain: these works have left their mark on video game history through their ability to push the boundaries of realism and intensity.
