The best games of September 2026

September 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest months of the year for gamers, with a string of major releases, highly anticipated sequels, and particularly original indie titles. From dark fantasy RPGs to action games, simulations, cooperative experiences, and family-friendly adventures, this selection of the best games from the first half of the month shows just how exciting the back-to-school lineup is shaping up to be.

► New Releases

Let’s start with some colorful titles. BOMBANANA! is a bomb-defusing game in which three players take on the roles of a blind monkey, a deaf monkey, and a mute monkey, respectively. The need to communicate effectively despite each character’s disabilities makes for a particularly chaotic cooperative experience, perfect for game nights with friends. Staying with the primate theme, Marsupilami 2 – Salsa Palombia returns with a colorful and dynamic platformer in which the three Marsupilamis must save Palombia from a mysterious Queen of the Mummies and her cursed music.

Rebel Wolves’ first major project, The Blood of Dawnwalker, plunges players into 14th-century Europe ravaged by the plague, where Coen must juggle his daytime humanity and his nocturnal vampiric nature. Its dark fantasy open world, its narrative shaped by the player’s choices, and its ambition naturally make it one of the most anticipated RPGs of the fall.

For those who prefer some vehicle fun, there's no shortage of options this month. With Hot Wheels Infinite Rush, Milestone moves beyond traditional racetracks to offer a vast open world; Bus Simulator 27 takes the simulation formula even further with a massive fleet of over 45 licensed buses; and WheelMates transforms a house and its laboratory into a huge playground for two small remote-controlled cars, in an adventure where exploration, platforming, and puzzles rely entirely on cooperation.

After more than twenty years away, the Onimusha series returns with Way of the Sword, which places the player in the heart of Edo-period Kyoto, a city warped by a mysterious malevolent force. For something even bloodier, Marvel’s Wolverine offers a darker adventure centered on Logan, his claws, his regenerative powers, and a much more brutal take on the hero.

► DLC & Expansions

Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is expanded with The Baltic Powers, which introduces new civilizations and new strategic possibilities centered on the Baltic region. This content is particularly interesting for fans of historical strategy games, who will be able to delve even deeper into one of the most accessible installments of the famous franchise.

► Ports

The first two weeks of September 2026 don’t feature any particularly interesting ports, but several highly anticipated ones are set to arrive in the following two weeks.

With so many big franchises, new IPs, and surprising concepts, September 2026 certainly has plenty to offer as gamers return to their routines. From ambitious dark fantasy to wild battles and Wolverine’s claws, everyone should be able to find something to their taste in this selection.

There are other interesting titles worth checking out that we weren’t able to include in our selection: Crimson Moon, SpeedRunners 2: King of Speed, and even the famous Halloween: The Game are also scheduled for release in September 2026.
