In a video game, the hero isn’t always the one who carries the adventure on their own. Whether they’re loyal allies, temporary partners, guides, friends, or simply characters we come to see as indispensable to our journey, companions hold a special place in our memories as players. Following the first two lists dedicated to the most endearing of them, this third list continues to explore these characters capable of adding more personality, emotion, or even depth to an adventure.
Diana is at the heart of Pragmata alongside Hugh Williams, and her role goes far beyond that of a mere narrative aid. This android is a true combat partner, capable of hacking enemies to allow Hugh to eliminate them, while the relationship that develops between the two protagonists forms the emotional core of the adventure.
A crocodile as a guerrilla companion, that's quite something! Far Cry 6 pulled it off with Guapo, a massive reptile as effective as it is terrifying. He’s capable of attacking enemies, regenerating, and even coming back to life after being knocked down. Still on the animal front, Senu is an eagle that allows Bayek to survey his surroundings in Assassin’s Creed Origins. This reconnaissance tool eventually becomes a true traveling companion. Its importance is, in fact, purely symbolic: it allows Bayek to gain a bird’s-eye view, spot his enemies, and explore his surroundings.
It’s hard to find a more intrusive companion than Johnny Silverhand, since this deceased rock star literally shares V’s brain in Cyberpunk 2077. Behind his arrogant demeanor and constant provocations, however, lies a deeply human character whose relationship with V gradually evolves to become one of the emotional pillars of the adventure.
Even though he’s more of a secondary protagonist than a mere companion, Miles Morales certainly deserves his place on this list, given how important his role alongside Peter Parker is in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Lester isn’t exactly a field companion, but his role as the mastermind and coordinator in GTA V makes him one of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor’s most valuable allies. Between his intelligence, his heist preparations, and his ability to pull the strings from the shadows, he proves that a good companion doesn’t necessarily need to draw a weapon to be indispensable.
Ultimately, this is what makes a great companion: not necessarily their power or usefulness, but the feeling that something is missing when we move forward without them. Whether they’re funny, touching, annoying, or sometimes downright cumbersome, these characters eventually become much more than mere NPCs: they become our traveling companions, and sometimes even the very reasons why certain adventures remain etched in our memories.
