The best zombie games (part 2)

After an initial selection already packed with ravenous zombies, desperate survivors, and ravaged cities, it was hard to believe that zombies still had so much to offer. And yet, the genre is broad enough to accommodate a wide range of approaches, from hardcore survival to frenetic FPS, co-op, psychological horror, and even rogue-likes: this second selection therefore rounds out our overview with new must-play titles.

With Dying Light 2, Techland expands on its formula by offering a vast open world where parkour is one of the survivor’s best weapons. With brutal combat, vertical exploration, a day-night cycle, and choices that shape the adventure, the game offers a particularly dynamic take on the zombie apocalypse.

Inspired by the film of the same name, World War Z features hordes of zombies capable of gathering by the hundreds and sweeping over survivors like a veritable human tide. Its cooperative focus and massive wave system make it a fantastic way to let off steam with friends, especially when the screen is literally overrun.

State of Decay 2 offers a particularly comprehensive take on survival, requiring players to manage an entire community rather than simply saving their own skin. For its part, DayZ transforms the zombie apocalypse into a true survival simulation where finding water, food, or simply trusting another player can become a matter of life and death.

If you're looking for something a little more colorful, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville builds on the formula with a new, vibrant, zany, and particularly generous shooter. Its numerous playable characters, multiplayer battles, and ever-present humor prove once again that the zombie apocalypse can also be downright fun.

Finally, with Resident Evil 7, Capcom has thoroughly revamped its famous formula by adopting a first-person perspective and a much more oppressive atmosphere. Even though not all the creatures you encounter fit the traditional zombie criteria, its take on survival horror and constant resource management make it a must-play for fans of post-apocalyptic horror.

Another upcoming project is worth noting. Arizona Sunshine, already available in VR, plans to move beyond virtual reality to a third-person cooperative game on PC. Expect a particularly immersive experience where every bullet counts. Its release on Steam in 2026 will allow a new generation of players to discover or rediscover this adventure, which focuses as much on immersion as on the thrill of taking down the undead.

This second selection thus confirms once again that zombies are far from being mere interchangeable enemies that you mow down by the dozens. From ruthless survival games to massive hordes and pure horror, each game explores the possibilities offered by the apocalypse in its own way.
