The best split-screen games

What could be better than playing a video game with friends, family, or your significant other, all comfortably settled on the same couch? While online multiplayer has largely taken over in recent years, split-screen games still have a special charm. Here’s our first selection of the best split-screen games.

It’s hard to tackle this topic without mentioning the studio that’s mastered this art: Hazelight Studios. They’re the ones who developed the excellent Split Fiction and its predecessor, It Takes Two. A true benchmark in cooperative gaming, the latter invites two players to take on the roles of Cody and May, a couple transformed into little dolls who must learn to work together to get their normal lives back.

Staying with games that combine co-op and platforming, check out Sackboy: A Big Adventure. PlayStation’s little cloth mascot shines in a colorful platforming adventure. With precision jumps, traps, secret passages, and challenges to tackle together, this game is a real treat.

Racing enthusiasts are in for a treat next. Which way do you go: Mario Kart World, a big hit, or its competitor Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds? The blue hedgehog and his friends are back on the track in an arcade racing game that focuses on speed and dimensional shifts. Up to four players can get together in split-screen mode, with tracks that change mid-race and plenty of characters, vehicles, and gadgets to unlock.

Wheelmates, on the other hand, lets you get behind the wheel of two remote-controlled cars to embark on a automotive adventure that combines exploration, driving, and cooperation. With its colorful world and offbeat humor, Wobbly Life offers a true open-world playground. Between odd jobs, vehicles to drive, treasures to uncover, and completely zany activities, there are endless possibilities for improvising adventures that are as fun as they are unpredictable.

Next up is One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, a spectacular musou game that lets you take part in the saga’s epic battles. You can unleash the powers of the series’ iconic characters and face off against hundreds of enemies on screen, making it a particularly unique choice in this selection.

This selection showcases the full richness of the genre, with experiences suited for everything from two-player sessions to large gatherings with friends or family. So, let’s break out the controllers and get ready for some memorable evenings on the couch!
