The best pirate games

From turquoise seas to raging oceans teeming with sea monsters, pirate games have captivated fans of adventure and exploration for years. This genre lets you experience explosive naval battles, set out in search of forgotten treasures, or live the life of a buccaneer in complete freedom. With the release of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced approaching in summer 2026, here’s our selection of the best pirate games to tide you over and set sail without leaving your couch!

Windrose is the rising star of the moment in the pirate universe. This indie project blends maritime exploration, adventure, and a steampunk fantasy atmosphere. Its unique visual style and original universe set it apart from more traditional depictions of piracy. Ship exploration and customization take center stage in the experience, much to players’ delight.

Developed by Rare, Sea of Thieves is a multiplayer game that has become the gold standard of modern pirate gaming. Its vast open world lets you sail between islands, shipwrecks, and fortresses with a crew of friends, in an atmosphere that’s as funny as it is unpredictable. The naval battles are particularly well-executed, as is the freedom given to players to create their own adventures.

Still in the realm of adventure games, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii blends the world of Like a Dragon with elements of modern piracy. The game relies as much on its absurd humor as it does on its fast-paced combat and unique tropical atmosphere. Between zany battles and maritime exploration, it offers a highly original take on the pirate theme.

Salt 2: Shores of Gold is an open-world survival game that focuses primarily on exploration and freedom. Players sail from island to island to find resources, upgrade their ship, and discover hidden treasures. Its relaxing atmosphere and procedural generation offer a true sense of maritime adventure. Although it isn’t solely focused on pirates, *En garde! * highlights fencing, duels, and an atmosphere inspired by swashbuckling tales. Its humorous tone, dynamic combat, and colorful world are strongly reminiscent of the adventures of privateers and buccaneers. It stands out above all for its fluid and highly choreographed combat system.

Based on the famous movie by the same name, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End lets you play as several iconic characters from the series, such as Jack Sparrow, and recreates the film’s major events through action sequences, combat, and some sailing segments. Tactical strategy and a roguelite experience are at the heart of Rogue Waters, which features combat that alternates between naval engagements and turn-based battles during boarding, all within a procedurally generated system that makes every expedition unique.

Pirate games continue to captivate players with their unique blend of freedom, adventure, and maritime chaos. The genre remains particularly rich thanks to a wide variety of experiences ranging from tactical roguelites to vast historical open worlds. One thing is certain: the call of the open sea still resonates just as strongly in video games. Check out our full selection below!
