The Best Mythology Games

Video games also draw on mythology as a source of inspiration to create rich and interesting worlds, though without necessarily aiming to recreate them faithfully. Some games actually retell myths, while others use them as inspiration. Today, we’re featuring a selection of interesting games that, each in their own way, let you immerse yourself in various mythologies.

Let’s start our selection with one of the most popular: Greek mythology. God of War III Remastered features Kratos literally wreaking havoc on Mount Olympus in a quest for vengeance and revisits an impressive array of Greek figures. For a slightly gentler approach, we recommend Hades.

Next up is the must-play Assassin’s Creed Origins, which takes you on a journey through ancient Egypt and its mythology, where beliefs, gods, and the afterlife play a significant role. We can also mention Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. When it comes to Hindu mythology, which less well-known but just as fascinating, our choice is Raji: An Ancient Epic, an indie adventure built directly around Hindu (and Balinese) mythology.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice also offers some interesting elements. Senua belongs to the Picts, a Celtic tribe, as indicated by her blue body paint. Celtic beliefs then intertwine with Norse mythology, brought by the Vikings who raided her village, and against which the plot unfolds. We'll live through a descent into the realm of the dead, Hellheim, and direct battles with several deities.

Japanese mythology is delightfully explored in titles like Ōkami HD, which features numerous Japanese figures, or even Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for those seeking more intense action. Chinese mythology, meanwhile, shines through titles like Black Myth: Wukong, which attracted a considerable number of players during the summer of its release.

Finally, for those who love to explore and encounter a whole range of mythologies at once, no game beats Smite 2, which literally lets you play as over a hundred gods from all kinds of pantheons (including Aztec, Maya, Mesopotamian, and more) and pit them against each other in PvP matches.

Whether through contemplative, narrative-driven adventures, action games, or even online multiplayer team battles, mythology has firmly established itself in the video game industry and offers a world of wonder for anyone who wants to explore it.
