The best Vikings games

Helmets, axes, longships, and feasts in grand Nordic halls: Vikings have everything it takes to inspire video games. From bloody conquests to Scandinavian mythology and adventures in the heart of the wilderness, these legendary warriors lend themselves perfectly to a wide range of gaming experiences. Here’s our selection of 10 games that will immerse you in the fascinating world of the Vikings.

It’s hard to discuss this topic without mentioning Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, as the game offers a particularly immersive experience into the life of a Viking clan. You play as Eivor, a fictional Nordic character embarking on a conquest of 9th-century England.

There’s no rushing headlong into battle in Northgard, a real-time strategy game. The goal is to lead a Viking clan, harvest resources, and expand your territory. A similar—though simplified—experience can be found in Bad North.

How could we not mention the excellent Valheim? In this survival game inspired by Norse mythology, you must gather resources, build your home, and face fearsome creatures in a wild Viking world—all while embarking on voyages across the open sea or overland, either solo or with friends.

To a certain extent—and without actually becoming a Viking—Kratos left Greek mythology behind for the Nordic lands starting with God of War (2018) and its sequel, God of War: Ragnarök (2022). Together with his son, he embarks on a perilous journey through these lands teeming with legendary creatures, gods, and frozen landscapes.

For even more diverse experiences, consider Tribes of Midgard and its cooperative survival mode, Frozenheim, which features Nordic colony management, or Jotun. In the latter, you play as Thora, a Viking warrior who died an undignified death and must prove her worth to the gods to gain entry into Valhalla. The immense mythological creatures, challenging combat, and stunning hand-drawn environments give the game a truly unique identity.

Whether they take us on historical conquests, strategic battles, or mythological adventures, Viking games have something to satisfy every type of player. All that’s left is to choose our longship, sharpen our axe, and set out to conquer new territories. Off to Valhalla!
