The most unusual Steam categories

Today, we’re venturing slightly off the beaten path to explore a slightly more original topic. With over a hundred articles showcasing our selections of games from the same genre or theme, today’s topic is Steam’s rather unusual categories. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the ones that caught our attention, each featuring at least two games.

The first one we’d like to talk about is… « Dwarves ». It highlights games featuring dwarves, often set in fantasy worlds, underground mines, or adventures centered on crafting, warfare, and management. Deep Rock Galactic is a good example, as is The Dwarves.

Next up is the « Cleaning » category: it focuses on maintaining, tidying up, or restoring environments, often with relaxing and satisfying mechanics. Notable titles in this category include House Flipper 2 and PowerWash Simulator 2.

Now it’s time for « Spelling ». Games in this category build vocabulary and mastery of words by transforming letters and linguistic knowledge into gameplay mechanics. Examples include Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey Remastered and even Final Sentence, a battle royale… of spelling.

It’s hard to wrap your head around the « Capybaras » category, which features… capybaras. Just to drive the point home, the most intriguing games in this genre are Capy Castaway and the upcoming Capybara Simulator. What do these games feature? Capybaras!

Finally, let’s tackle the last one: « Hexagonal grid ». This category includes games that use hexagonal tiles rather than square ones to structure their maps. Sid Meier’s Civilization VI and Humankind are two good examples. At this rate, we can’t wait for the next genre: « rectangular parallelepiped grid ».

That wraps up our first article on Steam’s most unusual categories, with two games highlighted as examples for each one. Coming soon, we’ll explore a new selection that’s just as outlandish.
