The game's iconic mounts

The game's iconic mounts

From the earliest adventure games to today’s massive open worlds, mounts hold a special place in the history of video games. Much more than mere modes of transportation, they often become true companions on the journey, associated with memorable moments, unique gameplay mechanics, or a strong visual identity. Some even embody the entire universe of a game on their own, to the point of being instantly recognizable by generations of players. Let’s explore our selection of iconic video game mounts.

Chocobos are essential mascots of the Final Fantasy franchise. These large yellow birds have served as mounts since the earliest installments and sometimes feature their own mini-games or breeding systems. Their popularity extends far beyond the series, as they represent the very identity of Square Enix. Also in this franchise, Coeurls are mythical felines that players can use as majestic mounts. Their wild appearance, characteristic lightning bolts, and legacy in the saga make them iconic creatures of the MMORPG.

The best mounts can sometimes be simple animals. Straight out of The Witcher, Roach is Geralt’s faithful mare. Always by his side, though sometimes clumsy due to now-iconic bugs, she accompanies him to every corner of the Continent, forging an emotional bond between us and him. Epona is undoubtedly the most famous horse in video game history. Introduced in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, she symbolizes adventure and freedom in the series. Finally, Agro, the steed of the hero Wander in Shadow of the Colossus. Her realistic behavior and constant presence heighten the loneliness and emotion of the journey. She has become iconic thanks to the silent yet very strong bond that unites her with the player.

Let’s now turn to some more exotic examples. Yoshi has been accompanying Mario for decades, but his role in Super Mario Galaxy 2 is particularly memorable thanks to the mechanics involving his tongue and his transformations. The adventure offered by Smalland allows players to use magnificent Geckos as mounts, which is far from common.

A must-play since its release, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 does us the immense honor of featuring Esquie as a mount in the game. This creature, with its strange yet elegant design, plays a major role in the game’s artistic identity. Its importance stems as much from its unique appearance as from the dreamlike atmosphere it enhances during exploration.

For those who might be a little scared of living mounts, don’t panic—Hogwarts Legacy offers the option to ride flying brooms. In fact, we can also mention the Hypogriffs, legendary flying mounts, or the Graphorn. This enormous magical beast, capable of charging at its enemies, serves as both a ground mount and a living weapon during combat.

Finally, in Horizon Forbidden West, Aloy can finally fly thanks to the Sunwings, machines inspired by pterodactyls. This mount completely transforms exploration by offering a spectacular view of the open world.

It also symbolizes the series’ evolution toward greater verticality and freedom.

Whether mythical, endearing, or spectacular, mounts play an essential role in the gaming experience. They enrich exploration, enhance immersion, and sometimes become as iconic as the heroes they accompany. Some even span generations and establish themselves as true symbols of their franchise. What about you—what’s your favorite mount?
