The best games from August 2026

Though it usually is a quiet period, August 2026 is shaping up to be surprisingly packed this time. From ambitious new IPs and highly anticipated sequels to promising indies and big releases for the Nintendo Switch 2, we got something for everyone. Here's our list of the most notable video games from the first half of August 2026.

New releases

The latest project from Game Freak's, Beast of Reincarnation, breaks away from Pokémon to offer a soulslike action-RPG set in a post-apocalyptic Japan where nature has reclaimed what's rightfully hers. It's one of the most intriguing new IPs of the year, and a serious contender for the breakout game of 2026, aiming to prove that the studio is capable of developing more than just the much-maligned Pokémon titles.

There's a radical shift in tone with Capy Castaway, which goes for a warm and relaxing atmosphere by putting players in the shoes of an adorable capy stranded on a tropical island. This peaceful adventure blends building, exploration, and customization. For its part, Big Walk offers a coop adventure that proritizes communication and exploration.

Fans of fighting games won't be left out. MARVEL Tokon Fighting Souls brings together Marvel's famous superheroes in a spectacular fighting game developed with the expertise of versus fighting specialists. In a different genre, Duskfade is an action-adventure game that focuses above all on its elegant art direction and fantastical world. Its polished aesthetic makes it one of the most appealing indie titles of the month.

The trailer for Low-Budget Repairs had us glued to the screen, and it gave us goosebumps. For those expecting yet another job simulator, this one truly offers something unique on top of that. For those who prefer firearms, check out Warhounds or Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, which this time explores that major conflict in a multiplayer FPS that’s as demanding as ever. The battles rely on communication, realism, and coordination between different units.

Expansions and DLC

The first half of August 2026 is marked by an interesting expansion, based on the excellent Mafia: The Old Country, titled Man of Honor. After being rescued and proving his loyalty to the crime family, the godfather entrusts the hero with a delicate mission: to lend a hand to a man of honor who has just been released from prison and is determined to reclaim what is rightfully his.

Ports

The release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on Nintendo Switch 2 finally lets players rediscover this RPG classic on the go. This remastered version features graphical and technical enhancements that do justice to one of the series’ most memorable entries. Finally, Lies of P Complete Edition brings together the base game and all of its additional content in a particularly generous edition. This Pinocchio-inspired souls-like continues to captivate with its gothic world, excellent art direction, and challenging combat system.

All in all, August 2026 proves that the summer season is no longer synonymous with a lull in the video game industry. Between ambitious new franchises, creative indies, highly anticipated blockbusters, major expansions, and excellent ports to the Nintendo Switch 2, there’s something for every type of gamer.
